At ALTEC, the Advanced Learning Technologies in Education Consortia, we watch the Internet; we watch how people use the Internet; and we watch the newest innovations applying the most recent telecommunication initiatives and translate them into educational solutions. Internet users are willing to seek information and judge resources, share information, communicate and work with people they have never met, invest in things they have never seen, and build things they could never build or use in the physical world. The Internet is an unbelievable learning environment. The ALTEC educators, designers, and developers believe that resources based on creative uses of the Internet can help teachers take advantage of this environment in ways that are almost impossible in a traditional classroom. We create resources, support collaboration and resource sharing, and foster alliances that help educators use the possibilities of the Internet for their students, or themselves. To pursue this goal we respond to federal and state initiated requests for proposals that support educational technology integration.

The Advanced Learning Technologies in Education Consortia at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning utilizes the most advanced and innovative technologies available to improve teaching and learning.

ALTEC is committed to taking hold of the promise and power of technology to empower learners of all types and ages and will continue to redefine the learning experience through the development of innovative projects. ALTEC supports over 3,000,000 users a month, focusing on three major areas:

  • Interactive, instructional Web-based resources
  • Online assessment and evaluation that can be scaled for implementation at the classroom, state, or national levels
  • Assistance for those with special needs in acquiring second language skills, visual and audio enhancements, or those with individual learning plans

Faculty and students at ALTEC come from a range of disciplines and programs, including the School of Education, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the School of Engineering, and the School of Fine Arts. This collection of talent gives ALTEC a wide range of capabilities including advanced networking and telecommunication expertise, instructional design, data harvesting and warehousing, distance education experience, and programming. ALTEC is committed to the development of new technologies to empower learners of all types and ages, and will continue to redefine the learning experience through innovative resources.
